This course provides a critical investigation into the quest for meaning and happiness as found in the Catholic tradition. Beginning with fundamental Catholic claims about what it means to be a human being, this course explores the call to beatitude in materials from several disciplines, including theology, philosophy, literature, and art, as well as ancient, medieval, and contemporary sources. Topics explored include a consideration of human persons in relation to divine persons, the supernatural end to human life, the human person as experiencing desire and suffering, the Christian paradox that joy may be found in the giving of one's self, and the search for happiness through friendship and love. Through all these topics, the course particularly examines the question, "What is the specifically unique character of Christian happiness?"

This course explores from an interdisciplinary perspective the history of the Catholic Church as it interacts with the secular world and is shaped by its dominant personalities and events. No other institution in history has survived, and flourished, for so long and in the face of so many challenges. This course will critically reflect upon the history of the Church, from its origins in the Apostolic Age to the modern period, as a series of cycles with a common pattern of creativity, achievement, and retreat. Drawing on philosophy, theology, poetry, music, and the visual arts, we will focus on three key moments in Mary’s life as mother: the Annunciation, the Nativity, and the Stabat Mater (Mary at the foot of the cross). These culturally and historically diverse depictions of Mary set the stage for an investigation into the meaning of her role, within Catholicism as a whole and within the lives of individual Christians.

This course provides an in-depth exploration of how literature engages Christian thought, experience, and practice and how a reader engages works of imaginative literature from an intellectually serious Christian perspective. The course will also provide an introduction to theories in the interdisciplinary field of religion and literature. Religious themes studied will come from a variety of literary forms, including those of myth, history, parable, short story, essay, children's literature, poem, and novel. The literature chosen may reflect a variety of cultural backgrounds so that, among other things, we may consider how meaning may be affected by changes in worldview. Specific topics vary; accordingly, credit may be earned more than once for this course number. This course fulfills the Contexts and Convergences requirement in the English major. NOTE: This is a cross-listed course; there are 15 seats on the CATH 334 side and 10 seats on the ENGL 334 side. Prerequisites: ENGL 120, 121, or 190.

This course provides an investigation into the ways in which Catholicism is inherently social and ecclesial. Its specific focus is on the Christian engagement with the world. The course's framework will be taken from the analysis of society into three spheres of action (culture, politics, and economics) as described in Centesimus annus. We will examine the ways that Revelation, the sacramental life, and the teachings of the Church call Catholics to seek holiness and to witness to their faith in the world. Specific topics may include social and economic justice, politics and public policy, lay and religious apostolates, education, and marriage and family. Life in society requires order. Order is established through authority which is power used for the common good. Power and money can serve human society well; they can also be violently destructive on both the personal and social level. Catholics have thought long and hard about both political and economic power and the complex relationships between them. What does God have to do with either? Does it really matter for Catholics? Rooted in Scripture, the thinking of the early Church and the developing Catholic community on social questions has always constituted a challenge to civil society to protect human dignity from the concrete threats of the day. The purpose of this graduate course will be to explore different dimensions of the Catholic social tradition, in its historical origins, its classic writers, and its contemporary expressions (e.g., papal encyclicals and conciliar documents). We will be discussing what the Catholic social tradition means for some of the contemporary challenges (“signs of the times”) we are facing in society today.

This course provides an in-depth exploration of how literature engages Christian thought, experience, and practice and how a reader engages works of imaginative literature from an intellectually serious Christian perspective. The course will also provide an introduction to theories in the interdisciplinary field of religion and literature. Religious themes studied will come from a variety of literary forms, including those of myth, history, parable, short story, essay, children's literature, poem, and novel. The literature chosen may reflect a variety of cultural backgrounds so that, among other things, we may consider how meaning may be affected by changes in worldview. In this course, through primary and secondary text analysis, we seek to explore the connections between the unfolding climate crisis and capitalism. Even though special attention in the seminar will be attuned to investigating the political, social and economic framework known as capitalism and its impact on the climate, we will also explore their links to other systems of oppression such as colonialism, patriarchy and white supremacy. Beyond an analytical framework that scrutinizes ideologies as well as underlying root causes of the climate crisis, we seek to also unleash students’ imaginations so they can more deeply envision the futures they wish to build and thrive in together. Thus, students will be invited to consider bold creative solutions such as those that the degrowth movement offers while also internalizing how that might show up in their very personal lives. In this sense, this course has a strong praxis dimension to it. Students will be invited to apply learning to concrete, practical projects which will address the ongoing climate crisis in their communities.

Major aspects of world and local conflict, theories of social science relating to conflict and violence, and various proposals for solutions. Among the aspects of conflict studied are cultural differences, scarcity of resources, economic and social structures, international trade, the arms race, corruption, oppression and war. In this class students will investigate how and why particular policies are developed, proposed, adopted, and implemented; will explore how social values shape and impact public policies; and will learn how to frame issues in ways that allow for more effective advocacy. The class will examine the relative power of diverse corporate and non-profit sectors in influencing policy debates and outcomes, including the role of think tanks. Students will analyze the limitations and strengths of diverse approaches to advocacy ranging from third-party appeals and solidarity efforts to elite decision makers, as well as the prospects for a politics of agency rooted in citizen-centered politics in which people mobilize to meet the needs of their communities. The course will integrate basic theory, interaction with public policy analysts and advocates, personal experience in persuasive advocacy, and case studies focused on issues such as climate change, economic inequality, land-food-hunger, and approaches to health care. Assignments will introduce students to various tools for persuasive advocacy and allow them to develop skill sets for using them.

This course is an introduction to the issues surrounding social conflict. It centers on equipping students with the theory and skills of conflict analysis and processes of engaging in conflict on the global, local and interpersonal levels. It contrasts a traditional conflict resolution model with conflict transformation, a paradigm that appreciates how conflict and violence are connected to underlying issues of justice. The course introduces students to a wide range of conflict transformation processes such as negotiation, mediation, dialogue, facilitation, restorative justice and conflict advocacy. It provides students with the opportunities to participate in these processes and explore potential vocational paths in the field of conflict transformation. As a component of the practice of the skills taught in this course, students organize and lead the annual World Cafe, a university-wide interdisciplinary dialogue. Throughout, the course engages students in a process of rigorous reflection of the ethics involved in engaging conflict. Prerequisite: Sophomore standing

A comparison of Eastern and Western moral theories with an emphasis on their application to contemporary moral issues.  Eastern theories may include Confucian, Hindu, Buddhist, or Taoist accounts of ethics.  Western theories will include significant attention to accounts important to Catholic intellectual tradition.  Contemporary moral issues to be considered will vary from semester to semester, but may include …sexual morality, abortion, suicide and euthanasia, family morality, race, sex, gender, war, capital punishment, technology, media ethics, business ethics, environmental ethics, and questions about Hawaiian sovereignty.
