This course introduces the sacred arts as they developed out of the doctrinal, theological, and liturgical life of the Church, both East and West. The course includes thematic discussions of the visual arts, music, architecture, and literature, with a special emphasis on the relation between theoretical principles and the technical elements proper to the art forms under consideration. The course also examines the emergence of explicitly modern artistic expressions which develop out of philosophical principles that contradistinguish themselves from their Classical and Christian precursors.

This course offers an introduction to the life and thought of the newest Doctor of the Church, St. John Henry Newman. Through extensive reading and classroom discussion of Newman’s most significant theological, philosophical, historical, and spiritual works, the course will examine the many ways in which Newman helped to shape the life of the Church in his own day, as well as his ongoing relevance for contemporary believers. Central topics considered in the course will include Newman’s role as a leader of the Oxford Movement in England, his novel conception of the development of doctrine, his understanding of the roles played by individual conscience and Church authority in the assent of faith, and his critique of religious liberalism.
