This course focuses on legal standards that protect and constrain communications in America, particularly, but not exclusively, in the context of mass media. Students consider First Amendment philosophy, examine historic free-expression cases that have affected the collection and dissemination of information, and explore how recent legal and technological developments influence both the character and the content of communication in all facets of American society today. Prerequisite: COJO 111 and junior standing, or permission of instructor
