The first year of elementary Arabic is designed for non-native beginners in the Arabic language to primarily learn the formal form of Arabic also known as Modern Standard Arabic. Intermediate Arabic I is a continuation of Elementary Arabic II. It is designed to further develop language proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic in the four language skills. In speaking, the focus is on the use of everyday expressions through discussion and presentations. In reading, the focus is on reading authentic materials from Arabic journals and homework assignments. Listening exercises and drills are utilized in class as well as in the language lab by listening and watching audio and video materials. Street art—including graffiti, murals, and other installations in public space—provides expressive avenues for marginalized voices, shapes urban space, and promotes competing visions of community development. In contrast to art that is created for museums or the commercial art market, street art is uniquely positioned to engage with social issues from a critical perspective. This class will involve an analysis of street art projects from the United States, situated in comparison with projects from around the world. Topics to explored include the history of street art over time (from its origins in graffiti to contemporary mural festivals); the impetus for street art in communities in the USA and globally; models for creating, preserving, and presenting street art; the institutionalization of street art; street art as it relates to diversity and inclusion; and, ultimately, the potential for street art to play a role in social change.

This course surveys historical and contemporary art forms of Oceania, a region that includes Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Sculpture, painting, architecture, and body arts will be explored in relation to gender roles, identity, repatriation, and Western influence. Students will learn how material culture, along with the concepts of mana and tapu, sustained highly stratified cultures in places such as Hawaii and New Zealand. We will also study egalitarian societies in which a balanced relationship is maintained with natural environments through daily practices and spiritual beliefs. Students will work with objects from the American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas (AMAA@UST). Films and other digital resources will be used to illustrate how Pacific cultures have changed over time.

Modern audiovisual, music, and interactive projects benefit from the expressive use of coding, visual programming environments, microcontrollers, sensors, data visualization, data sonification, automated fabrication, and open-source platforms. As technologies advance, these tools have become more common, less expensive, and easier to use. Students will put several of these recent technologies into practice through several assignments including a final project publicly exhibited or performed at the end of the class. Many fans, critics, and creators agree that we are living in a Golden Age of Horror. From new fiction by Carmen Maria Machado and Stephen Graham Jones to films such as TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID (Lopez 2017) and MIDSOMMAR (Astor 2019), the genre is proving to be finely crafted and character driven. In other words, horror in the twenty-first century is much more than slasher films, body gore, and jump scares (though there is still plenty of room for those!). The horror genre explores the human condition through the emotion of fear—fear of pain, disease, isolation, of being lost, consumed, or prey to supernatural forces. Horror also teaches us how to handle those fears. According to writer Ruthanna Emrys, “Horror as a genre is built around one truth: that the world is full of fearful things. But the best horror tells us more. It tells us how to live with being afraid.” This course explores horror from fairy tales like Bluebeard, to Gothic classics by Poe, to American cinema’s Universal monster films, to contemporary works by Jennifer Kent, Brian Evenson, and more. Payback. Settling scores. Taking justice into our own hands — from contemporary films to ancient literature, the quest for revenge has been explored in multiple genres, time periods, and cultures. What makes this quest so intriguing and appealing? Why are we fascinated with individuals who enact their own forms of justice or retribution, often going against social, moral, and legal codes? Is revenge an act of intense passion, a doomed act of honor, or twisted desire to inflict suffering? In this course, we will examine a variety of texts that focus on revenge and consider how the quest for revenge relates to questions of justice, the rule of law, and beliefs about divine and human roles in punishing wrongdoers. We will also explore how cultural ideals of duty, honor, and shame have shaped perspectives on revenge in Western culture and examine how gender roles and social structure influence our assessment of those who avenge personal or public wrongs. The difficult contradictions in our criminal justice system – one that purportedly aims to reduce violence and crime, keep us safe, and promote justice – hide in plain sight. Yet we as a society may or may not know the contradictory realities: the violence and injustices that can occur in our jails and prisons, disparities in legal representation and sentencing, and a host of tangled methods and aims often in conflict with one another. Increasingly, education for nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals includes the practices of reading literature, writing reflectively, and engaging in role-play to learn how to care for patients (and for themselves). This is sometimes called narrative medicine. By focusing on stories (of the patient, the healthcare professional, and the cultures and systems in which both live) and therefore humanizing the often-impersonal world of the healthcare system, it improves the quality of care for patients and reduces burnout among healthcare professionals. In this course we will engage in practices of narrative medicine, reading and writing about literature as a means of understanding ourselves and others. The texts we'll read illuminate questions about pain and illness, empathy and the training of healthcare professionals, the health implications of racial and economic injustice, and the need for reformation of the healthcare system. Writing Intensive
This course introduces students to the craft of creative writing, focusing on three broad genres: poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Students learn how various forms (e.g., free verse, the sonnet, narrative) have developed and evolved historically and within various contexts (cultural, political, social)—and by extension, what it means to write in these forms today. They receive instruction in setting, character, voice, point of view, literal and figurative imagery, rhythm and sound patterns, and literary structures; and practice writing in all three genres. Assignments include close readings of literary texts that model craft techniques, weekly writing exercises that encourage exploration and development of craft, and workshop discussions to develop students’ analytic and critical skills. This course satisfies a WAC Writing Intensive requirement and the Fine Arts core requirement. Prerequisite: ENGL 106, 121 or 190.

This course examines usability studies and user experience (UX) design in connection with the field of professional and technical writing. Students will be introduced to core concepts within usability and user experience, including audience theories, human-centered design, design thinking, and design justice. To apply these core concepts, students will produce deliverables common in usability and user experience roles, such as use cases, personas, wireframes, journey maps, and reports. The course also tasks students with designing and implementing a usability study of a user interface or other professional document. What are the connections between the making and reading of literature, the telling of and listening to stories, and the development of attention and resilience in humans? That is what this experimental and highly experiential course will explore. We will study writers’ creative decisions, asking questions such as why they chose specific genres (e.g., novel, memoir, poetry, drama), and how their decisions affect our reading experience and engage our aesthetic, intellectual, political, and spiritual imaginations. We will also engage in story-telling and story-listening practices, measuring the impact of those practices on our capacities to focus and concentrate, to read more closely, and to strengthen connection with others. Students should come ready for active participation in reading, listening, and telling stories. Readings will include texts from a range of genres, such as Ilya Kaminsky’s DEAF REPUBLIC, Quiara Alegría Hudes’ WATER BY THE SPOONFUL, Camille Dungy’s SOIL, and V. V. Ganeshananthan’s BROTHERLESS NIGHTS. Assignments will include a weekly journal of reading and creative practice and a collaborative research project. This is a good course for students wondering “what can I do with what I’m learning in English classes?” and those interested in narrative medicine, psychology and neuroscience, and humanities. The Jane Austen Society writes, "In 2025 we'll mark the 250th birthday of Jane Austen—a literary icon who continues to entertain, delight, and inspire generations of readers." That last comment is, if anything, an understatement: Austen's novels have never gone out of print, been adapted into films and television miniseries, inspired spin-offs like Bridgerton, inspired reams of other fan fiction, motivated re-enactors, and even created memes. So it is altogether fitting and proper that we should mark her anniversary with a course devoted to her work. In ENGL 390, we will read a selection of Austen's six novels, including SENSE AND SENSIBILITY, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, and PERSUASION; explore the major film adaptations; and study some of the best fan fiction, namely the superb play trilogy, CHRISTMAS AT PEMBERLEY by Lauren Gunderson and Margot Melcon (MISS BENNETT, THE WICKHAMS, and GEORGIA AND KITTY). Austen’s sharp social satire clearly still speaks to our own time, highlighting familial, relational, and community issues of gender, class, privilege, and social justice, all topics we will explore. This course satisfies both the Integrations in the Humanities and Global Perspectives core requirements, as well as a WAC Writing to Learn requirement. Prerequisite: ENGL 121 or 190.

Contemporary Issues in Film surveys a topic of particular relevance for students near the culmination of their coursework in Film Studies. The course focuses on issues of diversity, creative expression, and unique perspectives in Film Studies and how these unique voices contribute to our understanding of The Common Good. Students will expand their knowledge of Film Studies and they will incorporate disciplinary tools from Film Studies and at least one other academic. discipline, which they will apply to the study of creative production in film. Students will apply knowledge from coursework in multiple disciplines, they will expand their analytical abilities by learning about new films and writing about them, and they will create a portfolio of work that is representative of their learning. FILM 300 World Cinema: Director’s Cut with Professor Itkin What are the qualities of a film that allow casual viewers and cinephiles alike to identify films as distinctly Kubrickian, Hitchcockian, Felliniesque, etc.? Is it the visual style? The meaning-making technique? The unique artistic vision that shines through cinematography? This course explores the legacy of cinematic innovation of some of the world’s most prominent classic and contemporary “film auteurs." Auteur theory argues that certain film directors are able to put an individual stamp on their work such that they can be regarded as the legitimate “author” of their films. Through weekly viewings of select films and critical engagement with a variety of material—including essays, interviews, biographies and supplementary videoclips, topical readings, and discussions—we will test this argument. By the end of the course students will develop an understanding of film auteurs' contributions to the evolution of world cinema and develop an informed appreciation of film as an immersive meaning-making art medium.

The purpose of this course is to learn how to write effective narrative screenplays, with an emphasis on the creation of short scripts. In order to explore and identify basic dramatic principles of story, character, and structure, we will analyze numerous short scripts and films made from them. We will look at how the dramatic principles of short scripts have been expanded and turned into feature screenplays by exploring the work of various successful contemporary writers and filmmakers. Once we establish the basics of effective screenplays, students will apply these concepts to the development of their own original short scripts. By the end of the semester, students will have written several complete short scripts that are ready to be shot on their own, produced as part of a St. Thomas filmmaking course, or that could be developed further into feature length screenplays. This course counts as a production/practice course for students pursuing the Film Studies major or minor and as an elective course for English majors and minors. Finally, this course also satisfies a WAC Writing in the Discipline requirement. Please note that this course does not count towards the core literature and writing requirement.

This course is designed to introduce students to the filmmaking process, from script to screen. We will concentrate our attention on two main elements - understanding the technical concerns of narrative filmmaking (the apparatuses, learning camera functions and techniques, and using editing software), AND developing students' artistic voice through storytelling and film analysis. The course aims to strengthen students' ability to conceive and flesh out ideas that will lead to compelling, authentic, personally meaningful short films and give them the critical foundation of film study and production tools to execute their ideas. Students will begin to develop their own artistic vision and style through filmmaking.

This literature seminar examines novels written by Black authors on either side of the Atlantic. The course probes works that grapple with the ghosts of the Middle Passage, colonial occupation and contemporary immigration. Employing a global and comparative lens, students will explore manifestations and intersections of Blackness, history and literature across four continents. Through unpacking key formal and thematic parallels, the course fashions the Atlantic as a site of literary transformation and imagination. Novels include work by authors like Zadie Smith, Yaa Gyasi and Jamaica Kincaid, and have roots in Antigua, Trinidad, Liberia, France, Senegal, Brazil, England, South Africa, Jamaica and Ghana. Students will write critical essays (including one comparative essay) and reading responses. The course will also outline relevant historical and cultural contexts relating to texts, as well as explore effective strategies for crafting historical and place-based fiction. This course satisfies the Identity & Power requirement and the Global, Transatlantic, or Transnational Perspective requirement.

A multi-genre workshop using the "Pile and Style" method. This course is divided into two distinct halves. The first portion of the semester will be spent on heavy amounts of generative writing. Students will be encouraged to consider how and why they make particular writing choices and how they might maximize their writing abilities. During the second half of the course we will focus on intensive workshops and revision techniques to comb through the raw material we've created. This method is a great way to tackle larger writing projects or to envision your work as a collective whole. The writing and workshops will exist alongside readings, discussions, and self-assessments reflecting on the creative process.

This specific offering of the course, Afro-Hispanic Literatures and Cultures, examines 20th and 21st century literary representations of afro-identity in Latin America, the Spanish Caribbean and Equatorial Guinea with special attention to the intersections of race, gender, class, and nationality. We will analyze how the work of art (a literary text, a movie, a painting, a song, to name a few examples) serves as a space for reflection on concepts such as ‘race,’ ethnicity, hegemony, resistance, multiculturalism, and hybridity. Primary readings will be supplemented by relevant historical, critical, and theoretical texts. Along with these readings we will also view documentaries and films that deal with issues of race and ethnicity within these minority communities. Writing Intensive
This specific offering of the course, Afro-Hispanic Literatures and Cultures, examines 20th and 21st century literary representations of afro-identity in Latin America, the Spanish Caribbean and Equatorial Guinea with special attention to the intersections of race, gender, class, and nationality. We will analyze how the work of art (a literary text, a movie, a painting, a song, to name a few examples) serves as a space for reflection on concepts such as ‘race,’ ethnicity, hegemony, resistance, multiculturalism, and hybridity. Primary readings will be supplemented by relevant historical, critical, and theoretical texts. Along with these readings we will also view documentaries and films that deal with issues of race and ethnicity within these minority communities. Class discussion will focus on how identities are constructed within the space of fiction and other artistic representations. The objective for this course offering is to provide an overview of contemporary literary works by Latin American, Caribbean and Equatorial Guinean writers of African descent.

This special topics course, Social Justice in Latin American Culture, will address how struggles for Social Justice have played an important role in politics, culture, and social life in Latin America. Shaped by 1960s and 1970s discourse and addressing colonial legacies, these struggles include literature, music, and movements demanding land reform, protesting violence, or redefining politics: all have started by embracing evolving concepts of Social Justice. In this course, we will explore the challenged and varied history of that concept and the deep influence in the culture of the Spanish speaking countries of the region. More importantly, we will ask how different groups answer the question of fairness in their societies today.

This course provides a foundation in theater and drama for students who have experienced theater first-hand as well as for those who have never seen a play. Emphasis on production practices as well as roles in theater will be used to introduce the customs and conventions of theatrical art and management, such as acting, directing, and stage managing as well as design (costume, light, set and sound). In addition, the course introduces historical movements and theories in theater as a way of engaging with trends in new plays and productions. Students should expect to attend a live performance during the semester as well as engage with playscripts from both classical theater as well as new works.

Students will produce and present a play while they learn about key aspects of introductory theater. This course will examine the customs and conventions of theatrical art and management, such as acting, directing, and stage managing as well as design (costume, light, set and sound) by engaging first-hand in these practices. In addition, students will be introduced to historical theater movements and theory as a way of providing context for their own work. The class culminates in a live performance that is created, performed, stage managed and produced by the class. Theater production is not just acting, so students interested in behind-the-scenes work, design and other event management should consider this course. This class satisfies the core Fine Arts requirement.
