The first year of elementary Arabic is designed for non-native beginners in the Arabic language to primarily learn the formal form of Arabic also known as Modern Standard Arabic. During the year, students will learn how to express basic communication idioms and needs in Arabic. The year begins with learning the alphabet and progresses into learning how to read elementary level Arabic, writing simple sentences, and speaking basic and introductory idioms. Intermediate Arabic I is a continuation of Elementary Arabic II. It is designed to further develop language proficiency in Modern Standard Arabic in the four language skills. In speaking, the focus is on the use of everyday expressions through discussion and presentations. In reading, the focus is on reading authentic materials from Arabic journals and homework assignments. Listening exercises and drills are utilized in class as well as in the language lab by listening and watching audio and video materials. Street art—including graffiti, murals, and other installations in public space—provides expressive avenues for marginalized voices, shapes urban space, and promotes competing visions of community development. In contrast to art that is created for museums or the commercial art market, street art is uniquely positioned to engage with social issues from a critical perspective. This class will involve an analysis of street art projects from the United States, situated in comparison with projects from around the world. Topics to explored include the history of street art over time (from its origins in graffiti to contemporary mural festivals); the impetus for street art in communities in the USA and globally; models for creating, preserving, and presenting street art; the institutionalization of street art; street art as it relates to diversity and inclusion; and, ultimately, the potential for street art to play a role in social change.

The invention of photography and its dissemination throughout the world coincided with an explosive time in the development of American culture and identity. Probing the medium of photography as it relates to structures of power, constructs of race, and issues of social justice, this course surveys the cultural history of photography with a special emphasis on photography in the United States. This course does not have any prerequisites and it provides an overview of the development of photographic techniques and applications from the origins of photography in the 1830s to the present as well as a critical focus on photography and issues of diversity, inclusion and social justice from an art historical perspective.

This course covers traditional as well as contemporary sculpture, painting, architecture, and body arts of Melanesia, Island Southeast Asia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Students will learn how material culture, along with the concepts of mana and tapu sustained highly stratified cultures in places such as Hawaii and New Zealand . They will also study more egalitarian societies in which cultures maintained a balanced relationship with their environment through beliefs and social practices. Examples of such societies include the Asmat, Komoro, and culture groups that inhabit the Geelvink Bay region. Students will have the opportunity to work with objects from the American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas (AMAA@UST).

This class provides a foundation for producing digital photographs, videos and sound recordings that will enable the student to create a wide range of media texts, including journalistic multimedia stories, documentary films, dramatic or comedic productions, and audio productions. The class covers the basics of digital information, basic equipment operation, basic composition for still and moving images, high quality sound recording and basic digital editing, including digital storage and workflow. Students learn how to create digital media with an eye on technique and aesthetic quality.

This course, team-taught by a historian and a literary scholar, focuses on the long struggle of African Americans for justice and equality in the U.S. Analyzing literary and historical texts, students in this course will learn about and engage in research on African American history and culture. Utilizing historical, literary, and cultural approaches, this interdisciplinary course will immerse students into an exploration of the African American experience from multiple perspectives using dual disciplinary frameworks. For example, students may study Richard Wright’s NATIVE SON, but would read the text within the historical and cultural framework of the Great Migration, connecting Wright’s text not just to other literary texts, but situating it within an historical and cultural context vital to the novel’s creation and essential for its interpretation. The difficult contradictions in our criminal legal system – which purportedly aims to reduce violence, addictions, and crime, to keep us safe, and promote justice – hide in plain sight. Thus we simultaneously recognize and do not recognize these contradictory realities: the violence and injustices that often occur in our jails and prisons, profound disparities in legal representation and sentencing bound up with race, class, and nationality, and a host of tangled methods and aims often in conflict with one another. While "crime" news reports, movies, and series keep certain stories ever present in our societal imagination, they tend to obscure deeper stories. What roles might nation-states and corporations play in future space endeavors? In most cultures, readers tend to identify with heroes and hope that their goodness will triumph over the evil antagonist. However, every now and then, readers find the villain of the text far more appealing than its hero or heroine – the villain could be more intriguing than a hero, feature more human, relatable characteristics, could provide a reader with an opportunity to live vicariously through them, or a number of other reasons. Throughout the semester, we’ll read texts that future both classic and contemporary texts that are well-known for their villains, such as Iago (William Shakespeare’s OTHELLO), Tom Ripley (Patricia Highsmith’s THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY), Brigid O’Shaughnessy (Dashiell Hammett’s THE MALTESE FALCON), and Anton Chigurh (Cormac McCarthy’s NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN), examine the cultural context for each text and villain, and analyze what it is about these characters that makes readers want to root for them. This course explores the genre of noir in both film and literature, looking back at detective fiction of the 1930s, German Expressionist film in pre-war Berlin, America during World War II, and blacklisting in Hollywood during the Cold War. Also investigated will be “neo-noir” films and literary texts, noting how the genre has transformed over time, as well as how stories and screenplays are adapted for the screen. We will read works by Raymond Chandler, Dorothy Hughes, Janet Fitch, Naomi Hirahara, Marcie Rendon and Walter Mosley. From Sappho to Austen to Woolf to Morrison – women have been rendering the world into exquisite words for centuries. But how has the writing of women served as a critique of patriarchy? What impact has women’s writing had on important cultural and political movements such as abolition, suffrage, and environmentalism? In what ways has the writing of women been more radical than polite, more aggressive than demure, more confrontational than deferential? How have women consistently defied the limiting expectations of them through the creation of some of the most experimental, risky, and defiant works of literature in existence? These questions and more will be explored in this course, which focuses on the history of literature by women. While it will concentrate mainly on British and American women writers, the course will also address the work of non-western writers. This course provides an in-depth exploration of how literature engages Christian thought, experience, and practice and how a reader engages works of imaginative literature from an intellectually serious Christian perspective. What is now termed by mainstream scholars and activists as the "refugee crisis" is a subject that calls for serious study. In terms of sheer numbers, the problem is a substantial one. Conservative estimates put the current number of displaced people at over 80 million. However, the concerns of this course will go far beyond the numbers themselves. This course will provide historical and political context for this contemporary crisis. We will also examine other representative texts, such as the film HUMAN FLOW by Ai Wei Wei and the music of MIA. Almost everyone has heard of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, but far fewer are familiar with the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s, arguably the most important and influential Black artistic movement of the twentieth century. Allied with the Black Power Movement, BAM writers and theorists articulated a uniquely Black aesthetic, rooted in vernacular Black culture, and inextricably bound to a Black radical politics of liberation. Primarily focused on poetry and drama, BAM artists rejected western aesthetics and forms, eschewing artistic beauty and the comfort of the audience for direct attacks on whiteness, demands for political power, and professions of racial pride and Black nationalist strength. Most importantly, the artists and theorists of the Black Arts Movement created art specifically for Black people intended to educate, inspire, build solidarity, and provoke political and cultural revolution. For them, their aesthetics and their politics were one, and their art was revolutionary action. This course will examine the art and theory of the movement with an eye toward its nearly sixty-year legacy. The Black Arts Movement has had an outsized influence on Black art and culture that followed it: from Hip Hop to Black literature and publishing to Black Studies – and even the use of the word “Black” to refer to a people. Artists and theorists will include: Amiri Baraka (LeRoi Jones), Larry Neal, Sonia Sanchez, A.B. Spellman, Harold Cruse, Hoyt Fuller, Maulana Karenga, Toni Cade Bambara, Gwendolyn Brooks, and many others. This course satisfies the English Diversity Literature requirement and a WAC Writing to Learn requirement. What a time to be reading rhetoric by women writers. Ketanji Brown Jackson, MMIW, TEEN VOGUE, THE HANDMAID'S TALE…. All, arguably, use rhetoric that attempts to alter constructs of a patriarchal society. This is not new. In this course, we’ll read varieties of feminist rhetorical theory and will read women’s writing through a rhetorical lens, gaining insight into how women have used writing to change the world, in their time and in ours. We'll gain factual knowledge of women writers and their work; gain a broader understanding and appreciation of the intellectual and cultural activity of women writers; and analyze and critically evaluate ideas, arguments, and points of view. This course explores how contemporary novelists appropriate the nineteenth century to address postmodern preoccupations with gender, sexuality, race, class, science, religion, imperialism, and consumerism. We will read some classic literary works – e.g., Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre (1847) and Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White (1860) – and then explore twentieth-and twenty-first century retellings of these narratives. For example, Jean Rhys’s Wide Sargasso Sea (1966) retells Brontë’s novel from the perspective of Bertha Mason, the “madwoman in the attic,” and Sarah Waters’s Fingersmith reinvents Collins’s sensation novel as a lesbian love story. We will also examine selected film, television, and new media adaptations of classic texts and will situate course texts within the theoretical, social, and political contexts of the neo-Victorian enterprise. In exploring the trans-medial afterlives and reinventions of Victorian narratives, we will ask: What is Neo-Victorianism and why is it so ubiquitous in fiction, film, and popular culture of the twenty-first century? How do Victorian novels speak to their own historical moment and how do Neo-Victorian novels reimagine the past in ways that appeal to and challenge postmodern audiences? This is a hybrid course. We will meet three hours per week for twelve weeks. The other two weeks will be dedicated to conferencing and independent research. This course fulfills the early literature requirement and counts as a 600-level course.

This course presents specific linguistic and socio-historical aspects of the teaching of Spanish at the college level in the US. Some of the topics covered are: explaining and minimizing linguistic errors due to the transfer from English, accommodating the needs of learners who are heritage speakers, or integrating culture in an inclusive and relevant way. Through the observation of language instructors, the discussion of course readings, and the development of a teaching portfolio, among other assessments, students will gain a working knowledge of adult second language acquisition theory and become familiar with a variety of instructional approaches and the particular socio-historical context of the Spanish language in the U.S. This course is especially beneficial for College In the Schools (CIS) teachers of Spanish, as it will be taught in the target language.

This course is a survey of the literatures and arts in the Iberian Peninsula from the Eighth Century until today. Students will be reading different types of texts: from the first marginalia containing early signs of Castilian and Basque, to some of the most recent examples of interdisciplinary writing in Spanish. These readings, together with the discussions and the analysis of selected iconic buildings, paintings, sculptures, and movies will provide students with a broad understanding of Spanish cultural production, as well as of Spanish history over the years.

This course explores multicultural identity of the Hispanic Caribbean through a study of literature and cultures from Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Caribbean Hispanics in mainland Latin America, and beyond. The history of the Caribbean is remarkable because of the confluence of diverse groups and immigrants who formed the Caribbean's multifaceted cultures. Beginning with indigenous civilizations and tracing the effects of colonialism through the era of independence to the present day, this course looks at Caribbean history as background for understanding contemporary Caribbean literature and culture from a post-colonial perspective. Students will read works of literature and analyze music and visual culture, participate in class discussions, and engage in research.

This course, team-taught by a historian and a literary scholar, focuses on the long struggle of African Americans for justice and equality in the U.S. Analyzing literary and historical texts, students in this course will learn about and engage in research on African American history and culture. Utilizing historical, literary, and cultural approaches, this interdisciplinary course will immerse students into an exploration of the African American experience from multiple perspectives using dual disciplinary frameworks. For example, students may study Richard Wright’s NATIVE SON, but would read the text within the historical and cultural framework of the Great Migration, connecting Wright’s text not just to other literary texts, but situating it within an historical and cultural context vital to the novel’s creation and essential for its interpretation. The writing load for this course is a minimum of 15 pages of formal revised writing.

The course has a primary focus on exploring how media contents shape people’s beliefs about various social groups, and how media exposure and usage influence identity development, cultural norms. Students will work collaboratively and collectively to build their knowledge in how media contents are created, used, interpreted, and re-used by themselves and others. Foundation in theater and drama for the non-major beginning student; orientation to the dramatic tradition through consideration of plays and playwrights from the Greeks to the present; history of theatrical customs, traditions and conventions as they affect modern stage design, acting, directing, costumes, make-up and criticism. Experience in seeing and analyzing SCU/UST and Twin City play productions and in producing a play.
