Course Description: Horror in fiction and film has a way of expressing collective anxieties and fears and Latin American horror is no different. In this course we will explore written horror fiction and horror in films to examine how their allegorical themes and tropes relate to social, historical and cultural background information. We will center fiction by Jorge Luis Borges, Julio Cortazar, Horacio Quiroga, Emilio Pacheco, Mariana Enriquez, Samanta Schweblin, Monica Ojeda and others to dig deeper into the cultural anxieties generated by topics such a migration to the cities, political violence, gender issues, and ecological crisis.
