This course covers traditional as well as contemporary sculpture, painting, architecture, and body arts of Melanesia, Island Southeast Asia, Micronesia, and Polynesia. Students will learn how material culture, along with the concepts of mana and tapu sustained highly stratified cultures in places such as Hawaii and New Zealand . They will also study more egalitarian societies in which cultures maintained a balanced relationship with their environment through beliefs and social practices. Examples of such societies include the Asmat, Komoro, and culture groups that inhabit the Geelvink Bay region. Students will have the opportunity to work with objects from the American Museum of Asmat Art at the University of St. Thomas (AMAA@UST).

The goal of this course is to provide a foundation and framework for understanding the national, multilateral and international legal issues confronted by the multinational enterprise (MNE). What is now termed by mainstream scholars and activists as the "refugee crisis" is a subject that calls for serious study. In terms of sheer numbers, the problem is a substantial one. Conservative estimates put the current number of displaced people at over 80 million. However, the concerns of this course will go far beyond the numbers themselves. This course will provide historical and political context for this contemporary crisis. Supplemented by theoretical works such as Alicia Schmidt Camacho’s MIGRANT IMAGINARIES: LATINO CULTURAL POLITICS IN THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDERLANDS, Nicholas De Genova and Martina Tazzioli’s edited EUROPE/CRISIS: NEW KEYWORDS OF “THE CRISIS” IN AND OF “EUROPE,” and Agnes Woolley's CONTEMPORARY ASYLUM NARRATIVES, we will explore attempts by a variety of writers, such as Rabih Alameddine, Edwidge Danticat, Omar El Akkad, Jenny Erpenbeck, Yuri Herrera, Dina Nayeri, and Viet Than Nguyen, among others, to capture the many facets of refugees’ lives. We will also examine other representative texts, such as the film HUMAN FLOW by Ai Wei Wei and the music of MIA. This course presents specific linguistic and socio-historical aspects of the teaching of Spanish at the college level in the US. Some of the topics covered are: explaining and minimizing linguistic errors due to the transfer from English, accommodating the needs of learners who are heritage speakers, or integrating culture in an inclusive and relevant way. Through the observation of language instructors, the discussion of course readings, and the development of a teaching portfolio, among other assessments, students will gain a working knowledge of adult second language acquisition theory and become familiar with a variety of instructional approaches and the particular socio-historical context of the Spanish language in the U.S. This course is especially beneficial for College In the Schools (CIS) teachers of Spanish, as it will be taught in the target language.

Students will be reading different types of texts: from the first marginalia containing early signs of Castilian and Basque, to some of the most recent examples of interdisciplinary writing in Spanish. This course explores multicultural identity of the Hispanic Caribbean through a study of literature and cultures from Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Caribbean Hispanics in mainland Latin America, and beyond. The history of the Caribbean is remarkable because of the confluence of diverse groups and immigrants who formed the Caribbean's multifaceted cultures. Beginning with indigenous civilizations and tracing the effects of colonialism through the era of independence to the present day, this course looks at Caribbean history as background for understanding contemporary Caribbean literature and culture from a post-colonial perspective. Students will read works of literature and analyze music and visual culture, participate in class discussions, and engage in research.

In this course, looking into the transatlantic world will mean paying attention to the Hispanic Atlantic beyond geographical borders. This section is for Theology majors. This course will explore various approaches to God and God's relationship to humankind, including perspectives written by people traditionally on the margins of theological research. A central question for this section will be how God responds to injustice. This course explores the role of scripture, history, tradition and experience in the understanding of God. It examines both old and new theologies, asking key theological questions such as, “What difference does it make how people picture God?” “How could a good God create a world where evil and suffering are possible?” or “If God has a plan for the world, are we free to make our own choices?”

Special attention is given to how fundamental presuppositions and principles of each group studied affect their views on justice and peace, and contribute to or hinder dialogue and peaceful interaction with other groups. In addition to Christianity, students will study (at least) one far eastern worldview (e.g. Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism), one tribal religion (Native American, African), Islam, and one secular worldview (e.g. Marxism, capitalism, secular humanism). In this course, students will explore approaches to theology that emerge out of diverse cultural contexts. Sections may focus on biblical interpretation, dynamics of church life, mission work, or transnational solidarity through the eyes of the marginalized, or they may focus on efforts to articulate and bear witness to the gospel amid new cultures and historical challenges, according to the instructor’s discretion. Sections may focus on experiences of marginalization and oppression as a source for theological reflection for women (giving rise to feminist/womanist/mujerista theologies, for example), or for people of color or indigenous peoples (giving rise to Latin American, African-American, Minjung, and South African liberation theologies, for example), or for economically exploited classes (also giving rise to liberation theologies). This course will thus provide an opportunity to learn how the global Christian community is gaining fresh insights into the gospel that were missed when the dominant perspective on theology reflected primarily the experience of European men, or to learn how claims by Christians have at various times served both to challenge and to reinforce systems of power and privilege.
