The purpose of this course is to introduce the structure and function of cells, and how structure and function drives organismal physiology and diversity. By the end of this course, through lecture and laboratory exercises, students should have an understanding of the basic components of cells, how cells and organisms transfer genetic information to future generations, how communication is integral to cellular and organismal function, and how cells and organisms generate and process energy to drive physiological functions. The course will begin with limited on-campus meetings, then transition to a flexible “directed study” format with regular required check-ins with the faculty leader, providing ample time for the team to complete the project work. Industry-Centric Applications allows students to do a deep dive into a customer-facing industry such as retail, hospitality, financial services, or healthcare. Students will learn from practitioners and gain hands-on experience as they complete a project for a real-world client. This course is a continuation of Banded Dissertation I. In this course students will prepare for and complete their Banded Dissertation (BD) defense. A public defense is a peer-review process. The purpose of a defense is for the student to explain, describe, and critically analyze and defend their choices for their BD products. Students will discuss and defend their overall topic, scholarly agenda, the conceptual model for their BD, research method, ideas, and relationship to social work education and/or practice. Students will have the opportunity to publicly present their scholarly work and emerging scholar-identity amongst the faculty, colleagues, and the community at large and engage in public discourse. In this course, students will finalize their BD products and be well prepared for a public defense. Students will experience a public peer-review process, be challenged as they respond to criticism, demonstrate the ability to critically analyze questions and respond to questions, and expect revisions as part of this academic exercise. An introduction to techniques used in forecasting with emphasis on analyzing economic and business data. The emphasis is on timeseries data, although cross-sectional analysis is also covered. Techniques presented include variants of moving averages, variants of exponential smoothing, regression and ARIMA processes. Prerequisites: ECON 251 and 252 and a grade of C- or higher in STAT 220, MATH 303, or STAT 314. This section uses the R software package. This course explores creativity and innovation in education through case studies, hands-on activities, and community-based learning initiatives. Participants will draw insights from most successful and innovative initiatives from K-12, higher education, and learning organizations to explore their approaches. In this course, participants will apply a learning design method from previous courses to pitch an innovation initiative with a community partner, schools, or organization. As the capstone course in the program, the innovation initiative provides an opportunity for students to gather new field experiences and to produce tangible evidence of the design, implementation, and evaluation of the initiative. From Sappho to Austen to Woolf to Morrison – women have been rendering the world into exquisite words for centuries. But how has the writing of women served as a critique of patriarchy? What impact has women’s writing had on important cultural and political movements such as abolition, suffrage, and environmentalism? In what ways has the writing of women been more radical than polite, more aggressive than demure, more confrontational than deferential? How have women consistently defied the limiting expectations of them through the creation of some of the most experimental, risky, and defiant works of literature in existence? These questions and more will be explored in this course, which focuses on the history of literature by women. While it will concentrate mainly on British and American women writers, the course will also address the work of non-western writers. Ultimately, this course will examine gender and its role in both the composition and reading of literary texts. This course fulfills the Historical Perspectives requirement in the English major. Welcome to PUBH 350: Environment, Health and Justice. In this course we will examine public health structures, principles, tools, and programs used to address current and historical environmental health issues. Throughout the course we will consider how the world we live in impacts our health, how we negatively impact the environment and our own health, and what can be done to improve population health. We will consider these topics from an environmental justice perspective because around the world environmental hazards and diseases are not equally distributed across all populations. Environmental health issues are complex and in order to more fully understand them we will draw on ideas and concepts from sociology, economics and environmental epidemiology, toxicology, and regulation. This course presents a software planning and quality perspective that guides the selection of tools and application of techniques needed for the successful completion of software development projects. A successful software project must manage many different, yet integrated activities. These activities include software development lifecycle tasks such as requirements gathering, software design, and code implementation. Many other activities also need to be planned and managed, such as project scope, schedule, and cost. In any successful software project, when issues arise (e.g. the requirements change, a defect in the software is discovered, scheduled activities do not go as planned, etc.) they need to be prioritized and appropriately addressed. To minimize the impact of software quality issues, software testing and quality improvement activities need to be planned, executed and coordinated. The purpose of this course is to learn the foundational concepts and practices needed to produce software that is completed on time, within budget, and with the necessary scope and quality required. While software development activities are covered in other courses, this course will focus more on the software planning and testing activities. Project management topics covered include: integration management, scope management, time management, cost management, and quality management from a software planning perspective. Software testing and quality topics covered include: testing terms and concepts, lower-level testing (e.g. unit and integration testing), higher-level testing (e.g. system and acceptance testing), and test automation. This has resulted in new conflicts, sometimes in violence, but also in new collaborations and friendships. Drawing on several approaches to interreligious conflict and relations, this course will examine the dynamic encounters that take place between and among people of different religious identities and ask students to reflect on their own role in religiously complex situations.
