  Jeannie Hofmeister

Naturalist John Muir once said, “In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.” For hundreds of years, writers have used the metaphor of walking in the wilderness as a path to greater awareness of spirituality and the human condition. Mother Nature can be harsh and destructive, but the great outdoors can also sooth and heal. This course will explore how literary characters confront the mysteries of the dark forest and emerge back into the light with greater understanding and wisdom. Possible Texts include: THE WILD MUIR by John Muir, WILD by Cheryl Strayed, TWO OLD WOMEN by Velma Wallis, PRODIGAL SON by Barbara Kingsolver and selected short stories by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The writing load for this fully online course is a minimum of 15 pages of formal revised writing. This course satisfies the WAC Writing Intensive requirement and an Integration in the Humanities requirement.
