The rapid appearance and expansion of cortical structures is thought to underlie much of the evolutionary success of mammals. Why? What exactly does the cortex do? In this course, we will study the evolution and function of the cortex in humans and other mammals and compare it to other brain structures. We will look in-depth at the functions of higher-order sensory and motor cortex, and we will examine what happens when cortical function is lost as a result of disease or stroke, including how function might be regained. Prerequisites: NSCI 301, BIOL 354 or permission of instructor.
