  Farida Kasumzade

This course will develop the necessary background to understand the selection process of a material as needed in the design and development of medical devices. The student's knowledge of biomaterials will be increased and an appreciation for the relationships between a material's structure, its properties, and the implementation of properties to achieve a desired functionality will be developed. The goal is to present a balanced view suitable for students who do not have an extensive background in organic chemistry, biochemistry or materials science. The first half of the semester will concentrate on the properties of several classes of materials including metals and alloys, polymers, ceramics, and composites. Topics such as material characterization, biocompatibility, processing of biomaterials and failure of medical devices will be included in the second half. The course will be applications oriented, with particular emphasis on orthopedic and cardiovascular applications. Other current topics to be covered include such things like drug delivery systems and tissue engineering. This course will use a combination of lectures, guest lectures, student presentations, tours and self-directed learning. Prerequisite: ETLS 771
