This course focuses on developing spatial thinking skills, learning the basics of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and generating effective and compelling maps. By the end of the semester, you will use ArcGIS Pro and real-world data layers to transform raw data into actionable insights through hands-on projects that analyze Minnesota Landscapes. Because GIS is a valuable tool for both the natural and social sciences, learning to use GIS enables you to analyze big data, visualize invisible patterns, uncover hidden relationships and design informed solutions to challenges facing our communities and our common environment.

This class introduces students to the concepts, theories and research techniques used by medical geographers. We study the underlying environmental, cultural and demographic processes that shape the distribution and spread of disease in an effort to achieve a deeper understanding of the factors influencing human health. Much of the semester is spent using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to help community partners analyze and address health care challenges in the Twin Cities.
