The applicability of these techniques to land use analysis and environmental studies will be emphasized. In this course, students learn basic Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills and use them to address real-world conservation challenges. GIS is a powerful tool for exploring and understanding the relationships between the economic, political, and environmental processes that shape landscapes. Course projects include site suitability analysis for Minnesota rewilding initiatives and prioritizing conservation sites for the Nature Conservancy's land acquisition program. Over the course of the semester, you will develop the skills needed to effectively address urgent conservation challenges (including habitat loss and climate change) while preparing for careers in conservation planning, data analytics, resource management and the environmental sciences.
