This course is designed to enable students, regardless of musical background, to increase their understanding and appreciation of music, and to become more perceptive and educated listeners. Students will develop an understanding of music fundamentals, and a vocabulary with which they can communicate effectively about diverse musical traditions. They will cultivate critical listening skills in order to identify and understand various musical styles in the context of the ethnic, religious, philosophical, economic, and scientific influences that shaped these traditions. This course emphasizes the development of jazz, blues, folk, country, soul, pop, and classic rock traditions throughout history, as well as the composers and masterpieces of the Western art music tradition. This course fulfills the Fine Arts requirement in the core curriculum.
