The course is a combination of paleoanthropology, modern evolutionary genetics, and evolutionary psychology. It will cover topics such as: relationships among humans and other living ape species; evolution of hominids from our common ancestor with chimps; relationships of the various Homo species and their spread across the globe; role of natural selection in shaping human brain evolution and behavior in the context of our existence as a social species, including such things as mate choice and sexual selection, parental and grandparental care and the evolution of menopause, kin selection, altruism, and the evolution of morality; aspects of human cultural evolution, such as tool use, the adoption of fire and cooking, dietary changes, artistic expression, and rituals and religious practices and beliefs.
